"Your Idol"

This submission comes from someone who chose to identify themselves as just “Your Idol.” Apparently I have a role model I didn’t even know about!

This is their submission- “I want you to draw a self portrait (of yourself) drinking apple juice in a margarita glass with your right and left pinkies up, except here’s the catch – only your left hand is holding the apple juice (in the margarita glass). So like here’s where you’re thinking, “my idol, so what? My right hand is right sitting on my right knee with my pinky up?” YES. BUT IT GETS EVEN BETTER. on top of ur pinky (right pinky) is a dog (he’s back and white and exactly 40 lbs if you had to guess) balancing on one leg, dancing and smiling.”

This one was actually pretty hard to do, and I’m not super proud of it, for two reasons. One being that I don’t usually draw people, especially not self portraits, and I’m really not great at it. The second reason is that I have one way to draw a dog- one type of dog, from one angle, and I’ve never really ventured beyond that. So a dancing dog was pretty difficult. But hooray for learning experiences!

Katie is a junior at University of Maryland, in College Park, Maryland. She’s majoring in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and wants to travel the world one day. She loves whales and writing.

Katie actually draws/paints as well, but we swapped ideas so that we could compare what we originally had in mind with the final drawings, after differences in interpretation and style.

Her original idea was “a one-wheeled robot in the desert.”

Megan is a junior at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. She’s majoring in Physics, she plays lacrosse, and she loves dogs. She also really likes socks.

For this drawing, the only description Megan gave me was “a bucket of whales.”

This one was fun to draw because it was such a vague description that it could have turned out a number of different ways, but we both love how it ended up!

Marina Farrugia

Marina is a junior at University of Maryland, in College Park, Maryland. She’s majoring in Arabic, she used to fence, and she’s never seen Toy Story. Her favorite color is blue.

Once upon a time when we were small children, Marina was pretty good at drawing, especially horses. But now the tables have turned, and I draw things for her while she does all sorts of cool stuff.

For this one, she told me to draw “a dinosaur celebrating his birthday during the apocalypse.”

Jordan is a junior at Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina. She’s majoring in Psychology, she plays lacrosse, and she has Tourettes. She also really likes frozen yogurt.

I drew this one for Jordan a few years ago, but it’s kind of what inspired the whole concept for this blog. So really, it’s only fitting that it’s featured as the first post ever!

When she originally told me her idea, it was “a penguin eating ice cream on the back of an elephant on a hot, windy day.”
